Swimming Lessons – How to Swim The Butterfly

One of the more difficult strokes and certainly the most tiresome in the water is the butterfly stroke. By whipping your legs together and stroking both of your arms simultaneously and symmetrically, you can glide through the water with this stroke. Although it is fairly complex, swimming lessons can teach you everything you need to know.

If you have ever wanted to swim like a dolphin and glide smoothly, now is your chance. With some swimming classes and the proper guidance, you too can enjoy this unique and fairly difficult stroke.

You are going to start the butterfly stroke by holding your legs together and extending your arms above your head. From there you will kick your legs up and down in a quick whipping motion. You want to do this from your hips while bending your knees much like a dolphin would appear.

The third step is to pull both of your arms simultaneously and symmetrically through the water. Pull your arms through the water beneath your body while performing a large kick at the same time. This is intended to give you the boost you need to move your body through and above the water.

From there you are going to lift your head up and take a quick breath. The goal is to get a little air so that you can quickly get back into the water to propel forward. While lifting your head up you will quickly pull both arms out of the water and swing them forward. As soon as you have gotten your breath and both arms have swung forward, you will then reenter the water in a diving motion with your head and arms entering together.

As you reenter the water, you want to glide momentarily to move further through the water. Upon entering the water and gliding, you can perform a small follow-up kick to help push you forward enough.

The last step your swimming school will teach you is to do another pull-through motion with your arms while kicking with your legs to propel you up and out of the water. After doing this, you will continue to repeat all of the steps listed above.

There is no question the butterfly stroke is one of the most tiring strokes of all. You have to use all muscles in your body with constant strain and force put on your arms and legs. By following the instructions given in your swimming lessons, you too will be able to perfect the stroke of the dolphin.
